Amazing pictures appear to show Northern Lights near Plymouth

Matt was taking pictures along the River Tavy on Tuesday night – and didn’t spot the glow until he got home.

The rare sight was also photographed at Goonhilly Earth Station on The Lizard in Cornwll by Stephen Oxborrow, according to the website

Usually seen in the Arctic circle, the wondrous displays are caused by charged particles entering the atmosphere and are rarely seen in the UK, especially as far south as Goonhilly which is a few miles from the UK’s most southerly point.

Matt said: “Looking through my pictures on the computer I believe I might have captured a faint Aurora Borealis.

“At the time I didn't really notice it as it was very dark, but the long exposure used to capture the picture seemed to capture more detail then I remember seeing with my naked eye.
